Wales Appraisal Exceptions Management Pathways
This document summarises the key principles of medical appraisal in Wales its links with revalidation, and how it’s managed in that context.
It explains how the small number of cases that fall outside the usual appraisal route are to be managed by the relevant organisation, i.e., the Revalidation Support Unit, HEIW and/or the Designated Body (DB).
This document is for secondary care appraisers and designated body appraisal and revalidation teams.
Medical Appraisal Exceptions Management Guidance
This document supplements the Wales Appraisal Exceptions Management Pathways agreed by the Wales Revalidation Oversight Group (WROG) and contains routes that may be followed by Designated Bodies (DBs), along with an appendix of suggested correspondence that can be used for the different exceptions that may arise.
Prescribed Connections
The GMC outlines that nearly every doctor will have a prescribed connection to a designated bod., For most doctors this is straight forward. However, if a doctor is unable to establish a prescribed connection with an existing designated body, they should contact the GMC for further advice.
When a doctor moves to a different designated body, the new Responsible Officer may not have enough information to make a revalidation recommendation, particularly if the doctor moves shortly before their revalidation date. To support this process, a sub-group of the Wales Revalidation Appraisal Group (WRAG) developed the Responsible Officer Information Flow Form. This form should be completed by the doctor and the previous Responsible Officer, then shared with the new Responsible Officer to make them aware of any current issues etc.
Conflicts of Interest
This document outlines how to manage conflicts of interest between a doctor and an RO in the context of Revalidation.This policy is currently under review, any processes in motion might need to be reviewed considering amends to the next agreed version.
